Oak Level: The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Below is a comment I posted on the Rocky Mount Telegram today under an article that had nothing to do with Oak Level Annexation.  The reason I put the article there was because someone (Oak Level supporter, no doubt) directed the comments attached to the article back to …guess what? Oak Level and their annexation fight.

This is not the first time an Oak Level supporter has posted a comment on an article that had nothing to do with Oak Level or annexation.  And, it’s starting to piss me off.

Here’s a few things you need to be aware of:

Oak Level supporters have several websites. The sites do everything from stating their case to calling for a boycott of Rocky Mount businesses.  In fact, there is a “sample letter” on http://olcafa.org/ where you can fill in the blank, putting pressure on businesses to support no annex.

Oak Level has racked up legal fees out the whazoo. Every time they lose a court battle they take it to the next level. This may be their right and the “American Way”, but—come on folks—enough is enough.  It comes down to a Legislative issue not a court battle.

Oak Level tried, unsuccessfully, to get Nashville to annex them. This is well documented, so,  it seems Oak Level isn’t against annexation, but against Rocky Mount annexation. I wonder why?

Don’t rack your brain cause here’s the answer. Rocky Mount has a majority Black City Council. Yep, pure and simple, I’ve talked with enough Oak Level residents to determine that their main beef with all of this is the fact they have no desire to be governed by—as one person put it, “a bunch of nig**ers Hell bent of turning Rocky Mount into a grant city sucking on the hind tit of government.”

If you don’t believe me I’d refer you back to some old articles written by Mick Hixenbaugh.  Many months ago, he went around talking to Oak Level residents and some hinted around at this very reason: albeit, in a not so obvious way (sort of like a good ‘ol boy nod that white people make to acknowledge a remark implicit, but not actually said).

I, too, as a white guy have had similar experiences, both with Oak Level folks and non Oak Level folks.

At some point, the annexation will take place. Oak Level will find themselves at the crossroads. Do they want to support and strive in Rocky Mount, or do they want to tear it down at every give opportunity?

Some proponents of no annex have made the statement that Rocky Mount will rue the day, implying they will spend even more money in trying to split the Rocky Mount City Council, unseat members that “they” don’t like, and generally throw a monkey wrench into any attempt at progress.
