Another example of how dangerous it is to work in law enforcement these days.  But, it also shows the benefits of having the Rocky Mount SET team.  I’m a little confused with the bond, however.  If a suspect shoots at law enforcement with a .40 cal handgun why is he even allowed any kind of a bond?

The Street Engagement Team, which focuses on street level drugs and crimes involving firearms and violence, was investigating complaints of illegal drug activity and illegal drug sales at 617 S. Taylor Street.  At 2334 hours on 6/22/10, the Street Engagement Team obtained and executed a search warrant at 617 S. Taylor Street. Officers announced their presence and made entry into 617 S. Taylor Street.  Upon entry, officers again announced their presence.  The suspect, Antwan Harris, fired multiple times from a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun at the SET entry team.  Officers reacted to the gunfire by seeking cover and ordered Harris to surrender.  No officers returned fire.  Harris surrendered, along with Tinasha Johnson, who was also inside the residence during the incident.   
Upon a search of the residence, 3.5 lbs. of marijuana, two digital scales, $400, and a stolen firearm was seized.  The stolen firearm was stolen in a 2007 larceny case that occurred in Rocky Mount.
No officer was seriously injured from the gunfire; however, one officer had a bullet hole in a section of his uniform.  An additional officer received an abrasion from seeking cover from the gunfire and received medical attention for the minor injury.  A vehicle parked across the street at 612 S. Taylor Street was also damaged from the suspect’s gunfire.  The vehicle was unoccupied.
Antwan Harris was charged with seven counts of attempted first degree murder, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for drug purposes, possession of firearm by convicted felon, possession of drug paraphernalia, and damage to property. A federal criminal complaint will also be obtained on Harris related to charges of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, felony possession of a firearm, maintaining a dwelling, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a drug felony.  Harris’ bond was set at $1,000,070.00.
Tinasha Johnson was charged with maintaining a dwelling for drug purposes.  She was issued a $5,000 bond.
