The Rocky Mount Telegram will soon launch an “updated” website with a new feature: you’ll have to pay for some web content. Charging is a growing trend that started locally with the Wilson Times last year.
from the Telegram:
Shortly after the new look is launched, the Telegram will start charging for access to some news, sports and business stories. Although a lot of information on the website will remain free, to get material behind the “pay wall,” readers will have to subscribe.

I stopped my subscription to the Telegram well over a year ago. Frankly, I haven’t missed anything. Once in a while, I’ll pick up a copy of the Telegram at a grocery store if I’m looking for something particular. I do the same with the Wilson Times.
Welcome to the new world. A world where the Telegram isn’t local anymore. It’s controlled by an outside source with no local connections in our community. They can say otherwise, and do it with a straight face. But, it’s not local anymore.
