Broyhill was interviewed by homicide detectives while he was hospitalized from self-inflicted wounds. He told detectives that Jamie’s death wasn’t about the money. It was something else.

In court proceedings on Monday—the prosecution for the State entered into evidence one of three audio tapes of Broyhill being interviewed by lead homicide detectives.

The defense claimed that at least one of the other two tapes not entered as exhibits contained exculpatory evidence.

Exculpatory evidence is evidence favorable to the defendant in a criminal trial that exonerates or tends to exonerate the defendant of guilt. It is the opposite of inculpatory evidence, which tends to prove guilt.

Broyhill has stipulated that he killed 26 year old Jamie Hahn. Hahn was, at the time, fundraising and managing Rep. Brad Miller’s congressional campaign. Hahn’s only employee was Broyhill—who apparently ran the finances of that campaign and the day-to-day operations.

The defense team for Mr. Broyhill motioned for a mistrial—which was denied by the Judge pursuant to Rule 106 of trial court administration as provided by the AOC.
