Although this scene is playing out in Santa Fe, it is a story that could be told all across America.  I’ve read studies that suggest that for every person who is arrested for DWI – the person has driven multiple times and never stopped by police.  The old excuse that it was a one time occurrence just doesn’t ring true to me.  And, a simple Google search will show that, in fact, it’s not true.

Law enforcement knows this (or should know this).  Yet, as this incident reflects, some drinkers are pulled over and over again, and the court system fails the public by allowing habitual offenders back on the streets and access to vehicles.

In some ways, I blame slick talking attorneys also.  Yes, I know it’s their job to defend their client as any good attorney would do.  But, the entire system is often corrupt and judges may have too much latitude in the sentencing process.

Driving under the influence is tantamount to wielding a loaded gun on public streets.  Many states have tough DWI laws – but the judicial system is lacking when it comes to enforcement.
