Thanksgiving what started by Abraham Lincoln right before the Civil War. His hope was that people would gather together among family and friends and give thanks for all they had.

They also hope that by doing this small gesture people would entertain the better angels of their nature and forgo a civil war that would certainly wreak havoc upon this nation.

Unfortunately that wasn’t successful. The Civil War still occurred. But the proclamation of Thanksgiving Day survived.
