Wilson Ratepayers Question Bills

All throughout eastern North Carolina this winter has been particularly cold for long periods of time. But if Wilson and Rocky Mount ratepayers want to stay warm during these cold snaps, they will be faced with some of the highest light bills we’ve seen in recent years.

The reason for the astronomically high utility bills are twofold: 36 day billing cycle and temperatures below freezing for over 20 days straight.

Wilson residents have gone one step further in their effort to shed some light on ElectriCities and the  Eastern North Carolina power board. They have started a e-mail campaign requesting an investigation of electricities to the CBS news show 60 minutes.

I was able to contact 60 minutes this morning. A return phone call from an assistant producer left me with the impression that at least someone over at 60 minutes is aware of the e-mail campaign. The lady I talked with generally had no comment about upcoming story ideas, but she was aware and actually well versed on issues facing North Carolina rate payers.

So keep those e-mails coming, I think someone over at 60 minutes is actually reading them and making some decisions about doing a story on Eastern North Carolina utilities.

  2. My Dec bill jumped from $85 to $145 for Dec. That was bad enough. But January the bill is TRIPLE!!!!! This is on the Progress Energy company. Yet they post 4th quarter earnings jumped from 41 cents in 08 to 59 cents a share in 09! So they gouge us to pay their precious stockholders (themselves) more money! This is morally wrong! Many of us are living on medical disability retirements and our checks don’t go up just because the electric bill does. To me it is extreme GREED on the part of the electric company and does nothing to stimulate our already weak economy. In fact it stifles it as it is impossible to but other necessities when they jack the bill up to these ridiculous rates

  3. My mother’s Jan. and Feb. 2010 bill is running her in the thousand dollars range. My mother is on a fixed income. She just can’t afford to pay the high utility bill that are non stop. It seem that the poor and ederly people are the only one’s that are paying these extremely high utility bills.
