When asked about using federal stimulus funds to pay down ElectriCities’ debt, he said it’s not possible. He explored the idea but found there are too many places in the country facing soaring energy costs to be able to single out one area for special help.
To use federal funds to pay down the regional power agency’s debt would require offsets in the federal budget “and there’s not the political will to do that,” he said.
Long-term, he said, the answer to rising energy costs is innovation, and he’s glad North Carolina is getting involved in bio-mass research and exploring alternatives such as wind-generated electricity.
